Leaving the site
Leaving the site .... my "photographer" took this last picture of me with the painting at the 'top' of the hill before we loaded it into the van. I will work on it a bit more from memory and then take it back to the site one last time to finish. The scene you see at the edges is not what I was looking at nor is that full raking light in the painting but you get the idea... this painting is about transporting someone into a place...not so much an impression but an account of a connected harmonious ecosystem that is truly beautiful. I tried to do it justice... a little more work and I will post the final painting.

Drawing in the backyard with Wei Zhen
Wei Zhen (left) Sue Messer (middle) Mine (right)
Kind of cool to look at the "arch space" in all three drawings. I was situated pretty far to the right when we were in the yard so mine is a bit compressed...but Sue and Wei were near each other and while our styles are different, you can see the observation of the arching tree in all three....
I am so excited to have 5 remarkable Painters from China visiting this year as the UWW Schuh foundation residency. Wei Zhen came over to draw at my house as summer began...along with Sue Messer. Then we all went to Dales house to celebrate a little bit!

A couple more portraits
A couple of my paintings from last semester.....I love teaching painting!
It was a fun semester of working with the painters! I did this study as a demo and between office hours.
My friend Dale brought me this little dead bird...perfect for a couple of demos!
Onward Ho!
Watermelon break! Windzy loves watermelon.
getting there....detail
One of the cool aspects of this painting is that when viewed inside with window light...as the light changes on the painting it looks like it changes within the painting!
More to do but I am getting there!
Continuing!
As I painted I realized what I was in for...60x40" of amazing detail...and shifting light.
Many days I went running up and down with this big painting...but Pat helped me out a lot too!
Pats legs charging up the hill!
Wool blanket from my friend!
It got quite chilly and I wore my wool scarf...a humming bird very persistently "attacked" me! Exciting but a bit scary....tenacious little guy. Also I thought how my clothes matched the landscape palette on this particular chilly day!
I realized I looked a bit like the "wood gatherer" from Le Pages painting...!
Slogging on !
Mocassin flower
You can see the flower just off the right top edge of my panel.
Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of painting this Mocassin flower. It inspired my larger painting.
